Is Sugar Really That Bad for You?

For many years, fat was considered the nutritional bad guy, and most people were advised by health experts to cut back on the amount they were eating. But tides change, and dietary fat is no longer thought to be as unhealthy as it was back in the 1980s.

The fantastic 11 rule

There is a great likelihood that many people know the 10 rule. That is, when you multiply a number by 10, you add a 0 at the end of the number. However, the 11 rule may be unknown to many. It is so easy to comprehend.

– As you multiply any two digit number by 11

– Let us take 36 for this example (3-6) and notice the gap in between them.

– Then, sum up the two digits, 3 and 6 together

– Put the result, 9 in the gap in between.

– That is simply done 39 x 11=3 96

However, there is one tricky thing that you should remember, if the result after you have added the two digits is more than9, put only the digit representing the “ones” in the gap. For example:

74x117_4.4 +7=11

Put the 1 in the gap, and add 1 to the 7 to get 8, therefore, the answer to 74 x 11 = 814

How to multiply by 999, 99 or 9

Multiplying a number by 9 is just like multiplying it by 10-1.

As such, multiplying 9 9 is9 (10-1) whose result is 90 -9 = 81

Another example:

9 68 = 68 10-1)

= 680 – 68

= 612

To multiply a number by 99 is the same as by (100-1)

47 multiplied by 99.47 (100-1)

=4700-47=4653

Multiplying a number by 1000 means the same as multiplying the same by (1000-1)

Therefore, 55 multiplied by 1000 is the same as..55(1000-1)

=55000-55

=54945

How to squ9are two digit numbers

Take for example that you want to square 48. The first step is squaring each of the digits to get the partial results.

4 4 16 and 8 8 = 64. Then put the two digits together, 1664.

From there, you should multiply the digits of the number that you want to square.4 8=32

Double the resulting product to get 64

Add 64 to 1664 to get the answer as

HCG diet – does it really work?

The somewhat controversial HCG Protocol looks to the hormones for weight loss success, in particular human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG).

What it is
Developed initially by British endocrinologist Albert Simeons, the diet has been significantly refined – and complicated – to now include a 4 Phase Fat Elimination Protocol.

Dr Simeons was famous for injecting HCG sourced from the urine of pregnant women into obese people in the ’50s and ’60s. Produced naturally by the placenta to help women access fat stores when pregnant, HCG was believed to promote weight loss and reduce appetite when combined with dietary changes. Today, homoeopathic drops are used instead.

Phase one of the protocol is the most popular. Lasting two days, it promises licence to indulge in as much food as you like, especially fats. Phase two to three lasts for the next three weeks, in which time you reduce calories to only 500 a day, consisting of fruit, salad, vegetables and lean meat. Halfway through this harrowing three-week period, you stop taking the HCG drops and by the end of it, you’re well and truly ready to return to eating a normal, healthy diet.

The Claim
HCG weight loss can happen fast, but nobody’s claiming it’s fun.

“The system is set up to draw the fat from the fat cells,” says nutritionist Cyndi O’Meara, from Changing Habits.

“When you’re eating 500 calories a day, your body is supplying 2,500 calories a day in energy, approximately. So it’s actually a 3,000 calorie diet, it’s just that 2,500 calories are saturated fat that you’re getting out of your fat cells.”

O’Meara claims to have seen participants lose five to 10 kilos during the three week period.
“When I first came across the HCG protocol, I thought it was a load of rubbish,” says O’Meara. “But I just saw too many good results. Then I did it myself and was blown away by it.”

For
The HCG Protocol gets points for sheer originality as well as rapid results.

“What we’re doing in phase two and three, by lowering calories and eating only certain foods, is trying (1) to get the SIRT1 gene activated, which is an anti-ageing gene naturally activated by exercise and restricted calorie intake, and (2) get leptin to be reduced by the amount of fat you’re burning and get you to a point of leptin sensitivity again” says O’Meara.

“Leptin controls how you eat and when you’re five kilos or more over your ideal weight, your fat cells produce so much leptin that you become leptin resistant. This resistance makes you want to eat more.”

Against

Studies criticising the HCG diet have been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association and the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Both concluded that HCG was unsafe and not effective as a weight-loss aid.

“It’s not evidence based – that’s the main concern,” says Gudorf. “I suspect that any weight loss you see is the direct result of the low calorie diet and not as a result of the HCG. If you want to follow the meal plan that’s fine but beware that it’s a very, very low calorie plan. It’s not something you can follow long term.”

Fat burning supplements: do they REALLY work?

Fat burners are the supplement industry’s fave buzz word, but do they work and are they safe?

Supplements in the stimulants category may enhance fat oxidisation depending on the goals of the exerciser (and who you’re talking to).

According to personal trainer David Bayens (primalpt.com.au), “The benefits of caffeine are well known for fat oxidation and training drive. Green tea extract is also excellent as well as anything that supports the thyroid such as iodine.”

Consider your overall health

If you do choose to use supplements, consider what they’re doing for your overall health, not merely your fat-burning capacity.

According to Mark Ottobre, owner and director of Melbourne’s Enterprise Fitness, supplements should be viewed within the context of optimising body systems that domino into fat burning.

“You improve someone’s health; you improve their ability to burn fat. You’re balancing a deficiency in something that is required for so many functions in the body. Why would the body worry about burning fat if you’re not healthy?” Bayens says carnitine can help to ferry fatty acids into muscle tissue to be used as energy during training.

Be wary of excess calories & sugar

Maston, on the other hand, does not recommend supplements. “…The increase of fat oxidation is minimal and negated by the fact it makes people hungrier and anxious,” she says.

Supplements nested in shakes and gels can also counteract a fat loss goal.

“Some of the supplements have calories in them adding to the total intake for the day. Supplements like this also often consist of sugar or artificially sweetened ingredients that also contribute to fat mass,” Maston warns.

Pre- and post-workout protein shakes

According to nutritionist Rosie Mansfield, fat burning can be manipulated with a strategically chosen pre- and post-workout protein shake.

The optimal shake to prime the body to burn maximum fat is “a low-protein blend of soy isolate and whey protein”.

Dietitian Duncan Hunter says intake timing also affects how much fat gets burned.

“The best time to have a protein drink is within 30 minutes of finishing exercise (for example, a full body workout or weights). If it is an easy walk, it is best just to go for a whole food snack or just eat your next scheduled meal if it is within the next hour or so.”

To ensure you’re not cancelling out your workout with calories,
keep each shake to
around 480kJ.
